12 non-profit organizations in 8 states have been granted over 280 tutor training workshops.
Upon learning of their award, Erna Golden, Manager, Adult Education and Training, said:
“Brooklyn Public Library is thrilled that the Janice Cuddahee Fund has awarded BPL Adult Learning with 30 (Intake to Outcomes: I2O) online seats for Math Instruction volunteer tutor training! Foundational training in math instruction methods will help the adult literacy students enrolled at the BPL Learning Centers to learn more of the mathematical problem-solving skills they need for daily life, ongoing education, and success in the workplace. We appreciate that these online tutor training courses take into account the Literacy Volunteer’s need to feel capable of implementing the training. Incorporating actual models of literacy volunteers using the math instruction strategies with adult students will help the BPL literacy volunteers feel more comfortable with incorporating math strategies into lessons with their students.”
Thrilled to receive their “seats”
“When we first learned about the tutor training workshops offered in the I20 system, we knew they would be an invaluable resource for our volunteers. We’re very grateful to the Janice Cuddahee Fund for providing access to these thoughtful and comprehensive materials.”
The YMCA has been exploring the modules and planning for implementation in their program. They are very excited -- they’ve not had formal training for volunteers before, and they believe that the workshops they have been awarded will improve their program tremendously.
Roseann Anzalone, Executive Director, said:
"Thank you so much. All of us here at Tri-County Literacy are so grateful for the support from the Janice Cuddahee Fund. I'm not sure how we could continue to take in new learners at this point without use of the LNY online tutor training programs. We are growing much faster than we could have imagined and the as needed training has made it possible for us to bring in new tutors quickly. It is an amazing opportunity for small organizations like ours and your team is amazing for making it available. Thank you for all you do. It is truly appreciated."
According to M. Edel Godwin, Executive Director:
"I am delighted that we get the opportunity to avail our program of the Janice Cuddahee Fund. Thank you so very much to you and the Fund Committee. In 2020 training in person was simply not available. Rogers County Literacy Council is a small organization with limited resources; the challenge in 2021 and going forward is to rebuild adult basic education tutoring to be stronger than ever. The workshops provide two opportunities” one to allow virtual training and the second is to allow new volunteers the opportunity to train right away, as opposed to waiting several months to access an in-person tutor training. The instruction that will be available through the workshops will help RCLC rebuild its capacity to serve learners in Rogers County, Oklahoma...your gift and kindness are truly appreciated."
Mary Beth Harding, Vice President, Community Development says:
"The Nashville Adult Literacy Council is honored to accept these tutor training opportunities. These modules will help our dedicated volunteer tutors become even better resources for our adult learners who quietly strive to achieve their literacy goals. Thanks to the Janice Cuddahee Fund, more learners will experience the transformative impact literacy has in creating an engaged, independent, and confident adult life."
According to Haley Khoury, Volunteer & Development Coordinator at Covenant House New Orleans:
"Covenant House New Orleans (CHNO) is the only organization in the Greater New Orleans area that provides shelter and comprehensive supportive services to young people ages 16 to 24 who are experiencing homelessness and escaping trafficking. CHNO serves upwards of 900 young people annually, a number that continues to grow. Our Educational and Vocational team assists our residents with math, reading, and literacy skills, in addition to supporting our young students as they enroll in high school and college programs. Funding from the Janice Cuddahee Fund will directly support our new Drop-In Tutoring Center as we look to staff and train volunteers to support our young people."
Fox Valley Literacy is proud to support tutors like Kathy who says:
"I found my purpose again. Volunteering at Fox Valley Literacy has made my world bigger", and students like Cesar who says, "Fox Valley Literacy helps you with your literacy skills and to fully integrate into the community"!
Program Director, Steve Hannum, completed the Intake to Outcomes (I20) Math Basics workshop and said:
“The course was very helpful. So much has changed since I learned math! He says that the availability of math tutor training is allowing the program to offer their adult learners a math program for the first time.”
Here is a quote from their executive director:
“We would love the opportunity to provide more subject-specific learning opportunities to our volunteers, like the ones offered by the Janice Cuddahee Fund. For example, we have volunteers helping their students prepare for the US Citizenship process, but your skills-based training would make this so much easier!”
“It (online tutor training) will provide a more accessible, quality training for potential tutors. It will potentially free-up staff to devote time to other program needs.”
“The Literacy Council of Hot Spring County, Inc. is a perfect example of Ms. Cudahee's vision for providing online training for small, insufficiently funded organizations. We are a small council trying to meet the needs of our community on a shoestring budget. This grant would allow our literacy program to make a significant impact on the adult learners in our community through the training of volunteer tutors.”
